Why Payroll Can’t Be Dated on Non-Banking Days

If a payday falls on a bank holiday or weekend, your payroll must be adjusted to a nearby banking day, typically the Friday before or the Tuesday after.

Even though your payroll provider may be open on certain holidays and able to enter or “pre-process” payroll information, the actual transfer of funds can’t occur until the banking system reopens. That means no payments can be finalized until the next available business day.

The most common question we receive each year is whether employees can be paid on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Since that Friday is not a bank holiday, payroll can run normally and employees can be paid that day without issue.

What About Apps Like Venmo or Cash App?

It’s easy to wonder why instant transfers work in apps like Venmo or Cash App but not for payroll.

The difference comes down to how money actually moves. Those apps often use micro-loans or pending balances, showing funds immediately even though the banking system hasn’t yet reconciled the transfer. Payroll, on the other hand, must move real funds through official banking channels that only operate on business days.

While there are options like same-day ACH or wire transfers, these still require the banking system to be open and available for processing.
